GIS, or Geographic Information System, technology is now about 30 years old and changed considerably over the course of its development. Originally spawned from CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design) technology, it once was the purview of mapping specialist and focused on the geographic or mapping aspects of its capabilities. Indeed, for many years, the acronym could have been written as Gis. However, over the past decade, in concert with the development of computer technologies, the emphasis of GIS has been on the IS or Information System aspect of this technology and the acronym could now be written as GIS.

The Allegheny Group GIS focus is on this newer aspect of GIS, employing it as a true spatial relational database management system (spatial RDBMS) in many applications. The utility and cost effectiveness of a spatial RDBMS approach to diverse business, non-profit, and government applications has been repeatedly demonstrated over the years. The spatial database approach allows clients top view their extant databases in a new and more meaningful fashion. Paraphrasing the old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words it can be said that one spatial view of a database is worth a thousand numbers.

In addition to focusing on the spatial database approach to GIS, Allegheny Group also utilizes the latest developments in GIS software to offer clients totally imbedded GIS software that is transparent to the user, thus negating costly training periods.

Allegheny Group also considers GIS to be a complementary technology to any of the client’s extant software. It does not replace and database software but rather complements and enhances it.

Our approach to GIS projects is threefold: Allegheny Group can do the project and deliver the results to the client; or, Allegheny Group and the client can work together on a joint project; or, custom GIS software can be developed so that the client can do the project with little or no training.

A key component in the application of GIS technology is spatial data that are relevant to the client’s needs while also being spatially and temporally accurate. Although this used to be an impeding factor in the application of GIS technology to many areas, it no longer is. Allegheny Group has extensive knowledge of the sources of available, accurate, and cost effective data at all scales, i.e., global, national, state-wide, and local.
